What is Income Tax?

It is a tax levied by the Government of India on the income of every person. The provisions governing the Income-tax Law are given in the Income-tax Act, 1961. In simpler words, Income Tax is a portion of money that you earn paid to the government of India. Taxes have to be paid based on how much income you earn every financial year. Financial year in India starts from April 1st and ends on 31st March. 

Do I need to file Income Tax Return every year if i file it once?

No, the individual tax payers are required to file Income tax return if their income exceeds the minimum slab set by the government. It is possible that in a financial year income earned by any individual exceeds the minimum slab than for that particular financial year he is required to file ITR, But in subsequent or any other financial year the income earned by that person may not exceed the minimum slab limit than he is not obliged to file his ITR.  

Is Income tax return is same as GST Return?

No. Income Tax Return is different from GST Return. GST Return is to be filed by a person who is registered under GST laws while Income Tax Return is to be filed by a person when his income crosses the minimum slab limit. A person who is registered under GST and filing GST Returns is also required to file Income Tax Return if his income crosses the minimum slab limit. 

Who needs to file Income Tax Return?

Income Tax is to be paid by every person who earns more than the minimum income slab set by the government. The term person as defined in the Income Tax Act covers in its ambit natural as well as artificial person (Company,Society,Trust & Partnership firm etc.) Minimum income slab is applicable only for individuals, artificial persons are required to file their return every year irrespective of their Income.  

Can I file Income Tax Return even if my income does not exceed the minimum slab limit?

Yes, a person may file his ITR even if his Income does not exceed the minimum slab limit fixed by the government. 

My employer is deducting TDS from salary, do i still need to File Income Tax Return?

Yes, as your Employer will not have access to all your sources of income, like bank interest, capital gains, rental income, and others. You may use the form 16 issued by your employer as an acknowledgement for having paid the taxes, add all your other income, calculate and pay any additional tax, and file your income tax returns before due date every year.
